Plot = A murderous, psychopathic, criminal mastermind JOKER (Heath Ledger) has created havoc in Gotham City with repeated bank robberies. Will Bruce Wayne a.k.a. BATMAN (Christian Bale) be able to stop the menace or will JOKER play his trump card to destroy the identity of BATMAN?
Opinion = Worldwide, it is the 34th highest-grossing film, the highest-grossing film of 2008, and the fourth film in history, to gross more than $1 billion. It also has an IMDB Rating of 9/10. These statistics are enough to gauge how well the audience had received the movie. It is the second installment of Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy. In the first installment (Batman Begins), Christopher Nolan was successful in justifying the existence of BATMAN, as the man, who can challenge the law and order of Gotham City, if things are not in favor of its residents. Here, Nolan had the intention of establishing BATMAN, as the most sought after Superhero. For making Bruce Wayne (BATMAN) as a convincing superhero, he needed a “super – villain”, whose defeat can help him in meeting his objectives. Nolan created “the greatest villain of all time” in the form of JOKER. As an audience, you will find that the movie is made considering Joker’s point of view. Here, Joker creates havoc in the city, with other mob bosses, and BATMAN plays in a defensive – mode. The presence of JOKER in any scene gives you the adrenaline rush, and places the proceedings on a very superior pedestal. Unfortunately, JOKER’s character ate away the existence of all the remaining characters. It was so impactful. There are innumerable fans of this movie worldwide. If you still haven’t watched it, you are committing a SIN!
Performances = WHY SO SERIOUS? – This dialogue mouthed by Heath Ledger, as JOKER, causes a mind – numbing effect on its audience. The performance of Heath was so towering, that even after being the Hero of the Franchise; Christian Bale got reduced to nothing. Unfortunately, the world lost a GEM of an Actor, in the form of Heath Ledger, after the completion of this movie. On the other hand, I believe the characterization of BATMAN by Christian Bale is the best, till date. No other actor, who played the role of BATMAN on screen, matched the caliber and physical appearance of that of Christina Bale. But, practically, he had nothing much to do in the film. Actor Aaron Eckhart, as Harvey Dent, tried his level best to imitate the world famous “Harvey Spectre” from the web series SUITS, in his initial scenes. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, as Rachel Dawes, had nothing to do, except of being the cause of trouble for BATMAN and Harvey Dent. Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and other supporting cast had performed decently. Special mention of Actor Chin Han, as Lau, who left a lasting impression with his subtle performance.
Direction & Other Technical Aspects = Director Steven Spielberg had once said in an interview, that, “There are no bad actors, but Bad Directors”. Following this ideology, I would give complete credit to Director Christopher Nolan for the success of this movie. He unearthed the hidden potential of Heath Ledger and crafted a memorable masterpiece. Technically, the movie is extremely impressive. Also, the Screenplay written by Nolan is class – apart. The Background Score and the Cinematography, suits the genre of the movie.
