MANIKARNIKA

MANIKARNIKA
Review Rowdy -

Plot = The movie is basically a cinematic representation of the “Wikipedia Page” based on Manikarnika Tambe a.k.a Rani Lakshmibai (played by Kangana Ranaut), which majorly focuses on her rise as a warrior queen of her empire, till her final defeat in the battlefield.

Opinion = Bollywood Filmmakers have repeatedly failed to understand that a high ambition, must also be backed by an equally high and subtle execution.

The movie garnered immense hype and buzz since its official announcement in the media and is definitely a highly ambitious project for its makers (especially Kangana, since it’s her directorial debut as well).

But, their ambition has failed to tally with the audience, in the same spirit.

There was not even a miniscule need of making a biopic on the legend, mainly because, we have very less variety (twists and turns, in cinematic language) on our platter to relish.

She ruled her kingdom, as a queen, just for a period of 5 years.

I had no problem in watching historical accounts of King Akbar, King Ashok (though it was pathetic), Bhagat Singh, etc, as there was a lot of struggle and resistance associated with their lives, which can provide us wholesome entertainment, as an audience.

Here, Rani Lakshmibai only fought a couple of battles against the East India Company, and got martyred in a very short span of time.

To justify their choice of the plot, the makers wasted the entire first half in setting it up, with an overdose of unnecessary songs and useless sub plots.

The movie will start to engage you post interval, and my rating is also based considering the second half of the movie.

If you decide to go for this flick, you will have to keep patience and bear the lethargic first half.

However, you will not be completely disappointed, if you patronize the second half as well.

Performances = The movie completely belongs to its protagonist Kangana Ranaut. Its her “performance of a lifetime”.

Though she showcased a very poor acting acumen in the first half, but made up for the shortcomings and just soared and roared with her performance, post interval.

The movie has a pool of potent and highly talented actors like Danny Denzongpa, Atul Kulkarni, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Suresh Oberoi, but everyone just got reduced to being caricatures and did not get any scope or footage to shine with their performance.

I believe TV Soap actress Ankita Lokhande was overtly excited with her bollywood debut, that’s why she only screamed and showcased over enthusiasm, whenever she appeared on screen.

I will not mention anything about the Britishers shown in the movie, because SAB CHINESE KE THELE SE BULAAYE HUE LAG RAHE THE.

The supporting cast only did over – acting.

Direction & Other Technical Aspects = Director Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi has helmed the project along with Kangana Ranaut. I must state that, the action and sword – fighting sequences were shot and executed brilliantly. Rest everything was just average. There was a plethora of sequences crafted deliberately, for pleasing the ceeti – bajao audience. Because of this, the movie cannot entirely belong to the MASSES or the CLASSES. The Cinematography and Costume Design were brilliant. All the songs were unnecessary and forgettable.

Rowdy Rating = 3 / 5
