Review Rowdy -TweetPlot = The movie is a sequel to the 2010 superhit movie ROBOT. The plot gets shifted to current time, where a psychopath named Pakshi Rajan (Akshay Kumar) has created havoc in the southern part of the country, by robbing the mobile phones […]
Plot = The movie is an official hindi remake of the 2016 super – hit marathi movie SAIRAT, where Madhukar Bagla (Ishaan Khattar), belongs to a middle class family, who owns a restaurant at a picturesque location of Udaipur. He falls in love with his classmate Parthavi Singh (Janhvi Kapoor), who is the daughter of CM Candidate Ratan Singh (Ashutosh Rana). Their lives get tobsy – turvy when Ratan Singh watches both of them getting intimate with each other, which forces them to elope from Udaipur, for saving their lives. Will Madhukar & Parthavi be able to sustain their romance, or will fate tear them apart from each other?
Opinion = I would consider it as DHARMAFICATION of SAIRAT. At the crux, SAIRAT was very close to reality in its execution. But since its Bollywood (and the producer is Karan Johar), thoda lavishness to banta hai. The treatment of the movie has a Dharma Production touch on it. Since, it’s a remake; many scenes are copied from the original movie, frame – by – frame. However, I was happy to see that unlike SAIRAT (which was 2 hours and 53 minutes long), the movie is kept short, considering a mass appeal. I felt that, a lot of unnecessary time was wasted in the initial phases of the movie, in establishing the chemistry between the lead pair. But, the makers ensure that the audience remains entertained, with correct dose of humor, given at regular intervals. The movie touches the innocence and honesty of SAIRAT, just at the surface. But, the climax sequence was really shocking and moved the audience at the multiplex.
Performances = As an actor, Shahid Kapoor’s half brother, Ishaan Khattar, has a lot of potential. Myself, and majority of the other critics, were highly impressed with his debut performance in Majid Majidi’s, BEYOND THE CLOUDS, which had released in April, this year. Here also, he is completely in the skin of the character and has looked very convincing as a typical maarwaari – chhoraa. He has again delivered praise worthy performance.
In the trailer, the performance and expressions of Jahnvi Kapoor looked very naïve and mediocre, but her screen presence has really impressed me. I cannot comment much about her acting acumen, considering it was her debut performance and the graph of her character was one –dimensional, we will have to wait for her upcoming movies, to gauge her potential. I was eagerly waiting to watch a potent actor like Ashutosh Rana, back on screen, after a very long time. But, his talent was wasted here. His character did not had much–of-a-meat. His make-up did made –up for the lack of depth in his character. The supporting cast was just average in their performance.
Direction & Other Technical Aspects = After Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Director Shashank Khaitan took a project where he was just required to beautify the screenplay, tighten the loose ends of the original script and spend money on picturesque location. The only productive input from his side is the climax sequence, which slightly differs from the original movie and leaves the audience in utter shock. His direction is loose in the first half (which made me wait direly for the interval), but he improves the pace in the second half. The song Zingaat is situational and is highly energetic. Also, the title track is extremely melodious and is sure to give you goosebumps. The Music & Background Score by Ajay & Atul is fantastic. The Cinematography is also top notch.
