Review = So, the trailer of one of the most awaited releases of 2019 has released. The movie created the much deserved hype, last year, with the launch of its Teaser and the countrymen just got mesmerized with the resemblance of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, with one of the most revered, most controversial politician of our country; SHRI BALASAHEB THACKERAY.
Also, the date 25th January 2019; is about to create history in Indian Cinema. We have 3 big releases on this date, namely; CHEAT INDIA; THACKERAY & MANIKARNIKA. And gauging the potential and the treatment of the plots, in the respective trailers, the audiences are bound to buy tickets, for all of them.
The most interesting and unique aspect of the trailer, is its Cinematography. I believe, the entire movie (or majority of its shots) are been shot in a sepia tone, highlighting the Orange color (the theme of SHIV SENA); which is the most difficult thing to do, and the most interesting thing to watch.
I am only afraid with the fact that, the makers might have tried to glorify the image of Shri Balasaheb Thackeray, and in the process, it’s possible that they might have eliminated the shortcomings in his leadership. The image of Balasaheb was perfectly pitched, in the most balanced manner, in the cinematic masterpiece SARKAR, by Ram Gopal Varma. Though, SARKAR was more inspired from THE GODFATHER, than Balasaheb, still, there were many situations and incidents depicted in the movie, which were relatable with the life of the legend.
The trailer sensitizes the audience about the formation of SHIV SENA; allegations pitched against Balasaheb for the “Babri Masjid” incident; the challenges and protests faced by him, for being the supremo of SHIV SENA; his fight for the rights of MAHARASHTRIANS; his stand for the Muslim Community and the Marathi Film Industry, so on and so forth.
Every frame of the trailer, tries to showcase a different aspect of Balasaheb’s personality. And seeing a potent and highly talented actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, playing his role, there is no reason for the audience to miss this one.
Nawaz Bhai has mastered the art of getting into the skin of his character, for whatever role he chooses to play. And after MANTO, it will be his second biopic in the line.
JUST CANT WAIT TO WATCH THIS ONE !!!!!!

Plot = Both the movies of Gangs Of Wasseypur Series, showcase the formation of Coal and Iron Mafia in Dhanbad which was in the state of Bihar and now is in Jharkhand. The series covers a time span from 1941 till 2012 and is a revenge – drama focused on a single family, where the head of the family Shahid Khan, played by actor Jaideep Ahlawat and his son Sardar Khan, played by actor Manoj Bajpai, gets murdered by Ramadhir Singh, played by actor – director Tigmanshu Dhulia, and then the movie showcase how Faizal Khan (2nd son of Sardar Khan), played by actor Nawazudin Siddiqui, kills Ramadhir Singh and avenge the death of his family members.
Opinion = Well, believe it or not, this movie is everyone’s guilty – pleasure. Over the years, both the movies of GOW series have attained a cult status. There is a company known as 1018 MB which organizes special screenings of old bollywood and Hollywood classics. I got the opportunity to interact with their management, who informed me that, they receive repeated requests of back-to-back screenings of GOW Series and all the shows get housefull maximum within 4 days of its announcement on their website. I had personally been to the screening organized by them and was spellbound seeing the response of the audience. The entire auditorium was packed and people were clapping, whistling and even mouthing dialogues of the movie during the screening. It was complete chaos there. Especially the second part of the series can be considered as a modern – day SHOLAY. The characters of SHOLAY like Thakur Baldev Singh, Jai, Veeru, Basanti, Gabbar, Kaalia, Ramlal, Mausiji and even Dhanno (Basanti’s horse) left a lasting impression on its audience. Here also, Ramadhir Singh, Faizal Khan, Definite, Perpendicular, Tangent, Sultan, Nagma Khatun, Fazlu, Shamshaad Alam, etc have become memorable and people are still seen quoting names and tagging their friends with their identity.
Performances = This movie made Nawazuddin Siddiqui a star overnight. This was Nawazuddin’s debut project as a lead actor and his characterization of Faizal Khan has become historic in Bollywood. The acting and career graph of Nawazuddin in this movie and afterwards, is known by one and all and hence cannot be justified or described here. Another stellar performance was given by Director – Actor Tigmanshu Dhulia. He had broken all stereotypes of bollywood villains and has made the character of Ramadhir Singh so lively and memorable that it will be remembered and revered by generations to come. The supporting actors including (but not limited to) Zeishan Quadri (Definite), Richa Chadda (Nagma Khatun), Piyush Mishra (Nasir Ahmed), Pankaj Tripathi (Sultan Qureshi), Rajkummar Rao (Shamshad Alam), Vineet Kumar Singh (Danish Khan), Satyakaam Anand (JP Singh), Muran Kumar (Guddu), Yashpal Sharma (Band Singer), Inspector Gopal Singh and all the others who even had a presence in a single frame, have done a fantabulous job. Their performance has given this movie a cult status.
Direction & Other Technical Aspects = Baap Ka, Dada Ka, Bhai Ka, sabka badla lega re tera Faizal; Jab tak Hindustan mein saneema hai, log chutiye bante rahenge; Tumse naa ho payega; are some of the dialogues which are extremely famous and people are still seen quoting them everywhere. Director Anurag Kashyap has specially made the 2nd part of GOW in Quentin Tarantino Style. Especially, the climax sequence where Faizal Khan shoots Ramadhir Singh, the gore and bloodshed depicted in that scene, highly resembles Tarantino’s craft. The Screenplay, Production Design, Music, Cinematography, Background Score and all the other technicalities of the movie are top notch and have made the movie what it is today.

Plot = The plot is based on the C Grade Movies industry prevailing during 1980’s where movies like Band Darwaza, Purani Haweli and the likes were made in huge numbers. Actor Anil George is playing the role of Vicky Duggal who owns a production house in the name of ‘Duggal Productions’ and produces C Grade Erotic Movies. His younger brother Sonu Duggal played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui assists him in casting and other supplementary jobs while shooting movies. They are planning to shoot an erotic film titled ‘Miss Lovely’ and the movie showcases how a struggling actress played by ‘Miss Earth 2005’ pageant winner ‘Niharika Singh’ and other girls get absorbed and makes a career in the erotic movies industry.
Opinion = The movie is shot in a documentary style and will immerse you in the proceedings right from the first frame. It is a movie which will stay in your minds forever. The execution of the plot is rare and applause – worthy. Director Mohit Suri had previously tried to explore this plot in ‘Kalyug’ but he only made an average masala film without going in depth of the issue. But, here, the entire team has done a lot of research and hard work on the plot, which is quite evident on the screen. The audience literally needs balls to watch the reality which is presented through this movie ‘in your face’.
Performances = Bollywood is blessed to have an actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui. In the entire movie, he has played the role of an underdog who is dancing on the tune of others. It is his adeptness that we, as an audience, start feeling his pain and frustration while watching the movie. Actress Niharika Singh has given a very controlled and subtle performance and she is fortunate to debut with a meaty role. Actor Anil George has given an outstanding performance. I cannot imagine any other actor playing the role of Vicky Duggal better than him. It is a performance driven film and hence all the supporting actors and actresses have played their role as per the requirements of the script.
Direction and Other Technical Aspects = Director Ashim Ahluwalia had previously won ‘2005 National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director’ for his feature-length documentary ‘John & Jane’. We can see the finesse of his craft in this movie as well. He has shot this movie in a documentary style with majority of the scenes captured through hand – held camera. His Direction is slick and keeps you involved in the proceedings. The cinematography and the production design has given the film a ‘Midas Touch’. The music given by Edo Bouman transports the audience in the era of 1980’s successfully.
