LOVE SONIA

LOVE SONIA

Review Rowdy -

Plot = Sonia (Mrunal Thakur) is a teenager, whose sister Jiah (Aarti Mann) gets sold off by her poor father Shiva (Adil Hussain), to the brothel owners at Mumbai. Sonia approaches the agent Baldev Pratap Singh (Anupam Kher) and requests him to even send her to Mumbai for finding her sister. She gets sold off to the brothel owner Faisal Khan (Manoj Bajpayee) and her hunt for her sister begins thereafter. Will Sonia be able to find Jiah or will she surrender herself to the world of “paid sex”?

Opinion = There are plethora of movies been made in Bollywood, sensitizing the audience with the issue of Human Trafficking. The best ones were MARDAANI and LAKSHMI (A national – award winner, given by Director Nagesh Kukunoor). The point is, the issue is already been overtly exploited in the past. Considering the highly impressive ensemble, I was expecting that the movie will showcase a solution to the problem or at least will show a way – out, to the people who have already got trapped in this vicious circle. But, I am highly disappointed.

The movie is highly engrossing in the first half, but completely deviates from the issue post interval. The way Sonia gets saved from the traffickers is extremely silly. The impressive performance of the cast is the only saving grace here. I would consider it as just a one – time watch!

Performances = The movie has an extremely impressive ensemble cast.  After Gali Guleiyan, here also, actor Manoj Bajpayee scores full marks in the acting department. Same goes with actor Anupam Kher, who looks menacing on screen, as the pimp. Actress Sai Tanhamkar (HUNTERR Fame), as Baldev’s Agent, also suited the character perfect to the T. The performance of the protagonist Sonia, played by Mrunal Thakur, is the weakest link here. A little better actress would have taken the graph of the character to another level. Actor Rajkummar Rao, as the head of an NGO, was completely wasted here. I don’t understand why Rao chose this movie. Actress Richa Chaddha is becoming repetitive in her performance. Actress Frieda Pinto, also was decent in her performance.

Direction & Other Technical Aspects = In the past, Director Tabrez Noorani was associated with extremely praised and recognized projects like the SLUMDOG MILLIONARIE; LIFE OF PI, etc, in various capacities. This time, I am little disappointed with his direction. The movie gave me a feel of a “parallel cinema” in the first half, and became a typical Bollywood Masala, post interval. If Tabrez would have given more depth to the storyline, the final product would have been much better. Cinematographer Lucas Bielan has done a fantastic job. His setup of the brothel is enough to give you goosebumps. There is a dearth of Background Score and songs in the movie.

Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana

Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana

Review Rowdy -

Plot = The movie revolves around a couple Satyendra, played by actor Rajkummar Rao, and Aarti, played by actress Kriti Kharbanda, and their families. Their families setup an arrange marriage for this couple, with an exchange of a large amount of dowry, without the knowledge of the couple. Satyendra is a self- satisfied and simple boy whereas Aarti is highly ambitious and has been a topper throughout her academic career. Satyendra promises Aarti that he will let her pursue her career but his mother is of old school of thoughts and wishes her daughter-in-law to be a housewife. The problem arises on the day of their wedding, when Aarti gets to know that her prospective mother – in – law is highly rigid and would not let her pursue her dreams. With the support of her sister and maternal uncle, she flees away from the marriage facility. Her decision hurts Satyendra and his family deeply and he decides to take revenge from Aarti for causing defamation to his family in front of the society. Then the movie is based on how they make ends meet and lead to a happy ending.

Opinion = I am not able to fathom that why Bollywood Directors are not able to hold your attention for the complete runtime of round 2 hours or more. The first half of the movie is exceptionally well. It literally raises the bar of the movie and your expectations rise sky high. The conversations between the family members and the innocence and decency of the couple will tickle your funny bone. Also, a lot of tension gets build up while Satyendra’s Parents demand dowry from Aarti’s father and when Aarti elopes from their marriage facility. The performances of all the actors in these sequences are the Midas Touch for the overall movie. The movie becomes a revenge drama post interval, which is highly engaging and subtle. The main problem lies in the last 30 minutes of the film. Like in an airplane crash, when the plane is moving high in the sky, then suddenly turbulence is caused and it crashes on the ground, killing majority of its passengers. Here, the turbulence is caused in the last 30 minutes of the film and the script just nosedives on the ground, killing the audience. The climax of the film is a shit and will completely disappoint you with its utter stupidity.

Performances = I am again stating it that year 2017 completely belongs to actor Rajkummar Rao. This year he had 6 movie releases and all of his movies had received lots of praise and love from the critics and the audience alike. Here also, he is in complete form and has justified his existence in the movie. The flavor of the movie is actress Kriti Kharbanda. Majorly she has acted in tollywood movies and was last seen in Raaz Reboot. She has got a meaty role in this movie and she has utilized this opportunity optimally. The supporting cast includes Govind Namdev, Manoj Pahwa, Alka Amin, KK Raina, Vipin Sharma and others. All of them are established actors and have performed as expected.

Direction & Other Technical Aspects = Debutant Director Ratnaa Sinha is the spouse of Director Anubhav Sinha. As a first project, her direction is highly impressive. If she could have managed and edited the last 30 minutes of the movie wisely, the movie would not have become average. The songs of the movie are melodious and the cinematography is impressive.
