My Review Of – “ZINDA”

My Review Of – “ZINDA”

Review Rowdy -

Plot = The movie is based on a software engineer Balajit Roy, played by actor Sanjay Dutt, who has recently got married with actress Celina Jaitley and is invited to Bangkok to work with a software development company. He shifts his base to Bangkok and meets his school friend Joy, played by actor – director Mahesh Manjarekar. He buys an apartment close to a jetty and on an afternoon, he gets kidnapped by a group of people who approach him through a motor boat. Then, the kidnappers lock Sanjay in a cell for 14 years. During this time, after his imprisonment of around 1 year, his wife Celina gets murdered and the allegation is posed on him. After 14 years of imprisonment, one day, Sanjay is suddenly released from the prison and then he initiates a mission to find the person who ruined his life.

Opinion = The movie is an unofficial Indian Version of an award winning Korean Film OLD BOY, released in 2003, with minor changes and alterations in the plot. Many of the scenes in the movie are copied frame to frame. But, it has been a legacy of bollywood directors to copy the plots of international flicks in the name of inspiration. Most of the times, the copied content is either made deplorable or just average. But, thankfully, this is not the case with ZINDA.  It is one of the best revenge sagas produced by bollywood till date. The movie keeps the audience on the edge of their seat and creates a lasting impression in their memories. Bollywood has never produced such a dark thriller ever. Till the climax, audience is highly clueless about why Sanjay Dutt is made to suffer so much. You will get mesmerized after watching this movie. People who can accept realistic, gore and brutal execution of a movie, will love this flick. It is not a movie but an experience in itself. People who haven’t seen it, will be shocked to know the suspense in the climax.

Performances = Sanjay Dutt has given a ‘performance of a lifetime’ in this movie. I cannot imagine any other actor portraying the character of Balajit Roy better than him. Through his performance, the audience feel immediately connected with his pain, suffocation and frustration. By seeing his suffering in this film, you will feel relieved by realizing that it is a fictional story. On the other hand, John Abraham has given a fantabulous performance. If we consider his negative shades in his movie Aetbaar and in Zinda, we can infer that he is an adroit in playing the role of a psychopath on screen. The only weak link of the movie is over – the – top performance given by Lara Dutta. Actor Raj Zutshi has also played his part perfectly.

Direction & Other Technical Aspects = Director Sanjay Gupta is called a stylish director in bollywood fraternity. He is also the screenplay writer and Cinematographer for this movie and he deserves a standing ovation for his efforts invested in this film.  The overall treatment of the movie is stylish and unique, which differentiates this flick from the clutter of other revenge thrillers of bollywood. The background score of the movie sets the right mood. All the songs are played in the background and Zinda Hoon Main and Ye Hai Meri Kahani (sung by Sanjay Dutt himself) will give you a haunting experience.  The action scenes choreographed by Tinu Verma are at par with Hollywood.
