Plot = Based on the most criticized novel of ‘Chetan Bhagat’ with the same name.
Opinion = First of all, it is nowhere written in the ‘Constitution of India’ that you need to make a movie out of every crap written by Chetan Bhagat. No doubt, we had classic movies adapted from his novels like ‘3 Idiots’ (based on ‘5 Point Someone’), ‘Kai Po Che’ (based on ‘3 Mistakes of My Life’) and ‘2 States’ (based on the novel with the same name). But we must not forget that we also had ‘Hello’(based on ‘One Night at the Call Centre’). ‘Half Girlfriend’ is another weak adaptation of an equally weak novel. It has been repeatedly criticized for its illogical and naive content. Everything presented in the movie suits the title aptly. The chemistry between the lead pair is ‘Half Baked’, the script is ‘Half Cooked’, the music is ‘Half Humming’ and the direction is ‘Half Engrossing’. Forget about being ‘logical’, the movie is not even ‘Dil – Logical’. There is no justification as to how a girl can roam so freely in the city of Delhi anytime that also in a ‘Rolls Royce’. Why Shraddha Kapoor constantly talks in English with Arjun who even talks hindi in ‘Bhojpuri Accent’. In the opening scene, it is shown that Arjun is seeking an admission in a prestigious arts college, he constantly speaks in Hindi and also clarifies his weakness with english language, but still the principal of the college constantly speaks with him in English and that also in an accent borrowed directly from UK. There are many such instances in the movie where you will feel that your logical senses are assaulted. In a specific sequence, Shraddha calls and hands over her wedding invitation to arjun being still upset with him because he had attempted rape on her. Infact, in the year 2002, i happened to watch a movie named ‘Kya Yahi Pyaar Hai’ starring Aftab Shivdasani, Ameesha Patel, Jackie Shroff and Ashish Vidyarthi. The movie was just average but its climax was highly logical. In that film, Aftab falls madly in love with Ameesha and leaves everything for her including his brother, career and other personal luxuries. And when in the end when Ameesha gets convinced with him and starts liking Aftab, he realizes that she did not deserve all the pain he had been through and rejects her in the end stating a very logical justification. Unfortunately, at that time, Indian Audience were still under the influence of ‘DDLJ’ and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and were not ready to digest such a matured content and hence the movie was a box office disaster. Here, the couple is a complete mismatch in the society, they understand their language only on the surface, but still Arjun gets mad in love with her and his obsession is not at all justified by the director. The music of the film is forgettable. But, Arijit Singh is a gift of God on this planet. His song ‘Main Phir Bhi Tumko Chahunga’ has struck the right chord and is a masterpiece. There is nothing more which i can write about this dull movie.
Performances = Arjun Kapoor had proved his mettle in acting by giving a top notch performance in ‘Aurangzeb’. He was also very decent and convincing in ‘Ki & Ka’ and ‘2 Sates’. But, he is a complete misfit for being a bihari guy’ He has tried his level best to be like one, but his appearance and body language is highly urban. In one scene, he explains the financial condition of his family and his village and by his justification we get convinced that they are living in penury. But throughout the film he is in an ‘urban – avataar’ with neat beard and spikes – style hairstyle. But still his acting is applause – worthy in some emotional scenes. On the other hand, Shraddha Kapoor is a ‘mannequin’. She just can’t act. She has ensured that she maintains the same emotions for every kind of scene and has tried to justify the fees she has charged from the producer. Her last outing ‘OK Jaanu’ was a disaster. Her only memorable performance of her career till date is ‘Aashiqui 2’ but she was not the only reason for film’s success. There were many other factors which worked for the movie. Actor Vikrant Massey has done a very good job as a true friend of Arjun in the film.
Direction & Other Technical Aspects = I had decent expectations from Director Mohit Suri who has given us romantic classics like ‘Aashiqui 2’ and ‘Wo Lamhe’, but this time he has disappointed the audience. I felt that at some places the Director himself was clueless about what he is trying to convey with this film.
Rowdy Rating – 2 / 5
